WHAT IS MUN?
Model United Nations (MUN) is an educational simulation in which educational institutions create student delegates to represent certain countries and United Nations agencies. MUN develops participants’ critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership skills, as well as their research, speaking, debating, and writing abilities. The program aims to engage students and provide them with a deeper understanding of current global issues.
Typically, it includes conferences, panels, workshops, or forums. The largest Model United Nations organization recognized by the United Nations itself is the Lahey International Model United Nations.
Delegates, known as participants in the Model United Nations conference, are assigned to committees, typically representing countries or political leaders. The main agenda items for discussion in the committees are announced prior to the meeting. Delegates are expected to conduct research related to the topic and their countries’ perspectives on it before the conference. They generate policy proposals that they will discuss with other delegates while staying true to the actual position of the country or organization they represent.
At the end of the conferences, delegates vote on written policies (commonly known as Working Papers) that are accepted by committee chairs for approval by majority vote. Delegates who perform best in each committee are sometimes awarded various honors (such us Honorable Mention, Outstanding Delegate, or Best Delegate)
